Algiers Ferry Terminal Renovation

Algiers Ferry Terminal is an exciting and challenging project to repurpose the decommissioned terminal building and associated site. The Regional Transportation Authority asked Studio West to rethink the approach to the once car-centric site and terminal experience to accommodate their new accessible and pedestrian-only ferry boats. The project includes a $9.6M renovation to the existing terminal, including a new accessible ramp addition, a new elevator, and site elements, to the federal property located on the west bank of the Mississippi River in the Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans. Studio West is working with a multidisciplinary team, collaborating in support of a shared vision for a highly functional terminal and community destination to increase ridership of the Algiers / Canal ferry route.
Transforming a car-centered ferry terminal into a sustainable multimodal community hub

Studio West is leading the project with Batture Engineering. Our design team is working closely with the Regional Transportation Authority team and leadership to engage the community during programming and design. Understanding the history of Algiers and community connection to the Mississippi River is crucial.
In 1723 Africans arrived in what would later become known as Algiers Point, where they would be processed before being sold to owners in New Orleans and surrounding area. This marked the beginning of the New Orleans’ pivotal role in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. As such, ship building and repair was an industry of Algiers. Ferry service between Canal Street and Algiers across the Mississippi River was established in 1827 and remains integral to the New Orleans community living with the Mississippi River.
History and community conversations to inform the design
The approach to renovation and revitalizing the site is community-focused. Kicking off with a series of public stakeholder workshops in March 2024. The workshops were structured to gather and listen to neighbors and ferry riders about their past experiences and goals for the future of the ferry. As the design progressed, the design team returned to the community in June 2024 to present the design concept and gather feedback. Studio West is leading Programming, Pre-Design, Architecture, and Interior Design, as well as coordinating the dedicated team of engineers, landscape architects, cost estimators, and leading the coordination with applicable Regulatory Agencies. The project is scheduled to start construction in Winter 2025 with construction being complete in 2026.
