The Dog House
When Studio West was approached with the concept of designing a combination of a private dog run with an outdoor restaurant and bar, we could not resist the challenge. Located on a typical narrow New Orleans lot, Studio West's design team concluded that the best arrangement was to place the dog run at the front of the property with the bar and restaurant in the rear. Separation between the two is provided by carefully considered fencing to separate dogs from the bar and restaurant.
Dog park and a bar, really?
The Dog House is located next to two busy thoroughfares, but firmly at the edge of a residential neighborhood. Studio West designed the new construction to bridge the residential and commercial edge of the neighborhood by designing the roof form of the restaurant as a playful collection of three house shapes, carved away to provide space for the bar, outdoor seating area, and kitchen. The material of the roof is dark gray integrally-colored metal roof panels that fold down the walls. The underside of the roof forms is painted a bold yellow.
Neighborhood context and design inspiration from a dog’s perspective
Studio West researched how dogs see color and learned they can distinguish between variations of blues and yellows and whites and grays. Considering this, we chose a color palette of cool blues and bold yellow colors for the exterior seating area of the restaurant. Studio West selected and procured colorful and durable outdoor furnishings that encourage humans and dogs to stay awhile. Combined with a colorful mural designed by Madison Roy, The Dog House is a playful place where both humans and dogs have something to look forward to.
